Mage for low levels
By Steve on Jan 30, 2007 | In Mage | 2 feedbacks »
When training mage never wear armour that is made of metal or dragon hide (Unless you are using curse but we will go into this later) this will ensure you get the maximum xp per rune.
From the very low level you can speak to the mage tutor near Lumbridge general store and he will give you some runes if you don't have any on you or in your bank, if you have some drop them on the floor ask for some more then pick them up again.
Once you have your runes cast whatever you can cast on the goblins just across the bridge from the Lumbridge guides, wear the best mage armour you can get, even a wizard hat will help very slightly, mage them over the fence so you don't get hurt, when you kill a goblin collect his drop and bury his bones, sell anything they drop to the general store, you can go back and get runes every 30 minutes so train a bit of melee when you are waiting.
Unless you want to be a mage pure I suggest you get your combat level up a bit, this can be done easily by attacking the rats by the castle or the men outside, pick up everything they drop and sell in the general store to get yourself some cash, if you are p2p then collect their herbs and bank to sell to players or later, men and women often drop ranaars current street price 7k each.
When you get a combat level of 41 then you have the chance of some very good mage xp, go to the wizards circle near Varrock south gate, attack the level 7 dark wizards there, do not wear metal armour, wear leather range gear and use the best melee weapon you can use, when you kill these wizards they drop a lot of runes, use the runes on the other wizards as you get them so you are effectively killing wizards getting runes as drops and using their own runes back on them as spells.

The reason I suggest a combat level of 41 is because there are level 20 wizards there and they are aggressive and will attack anyone under that level, because they mage they can get you for a long way, I have seen many a new player losing their items to these bad tempered wizards.
This is a busy spot and many players leave the bones on the floor run around pick up all the bones and bury them this will help your prayer fly up.
If you start to get low on health run through Varrock gate and head immediately east there is a cabbage patch there pick the cabbages and eat till you are at full health then take a few more so you can fight for longer.
The runes you can not use put in the bank until you can use them or if you prefer sell them to players.
Use this method for as long as you like it is good free mage xp and if you sell the runes you can even make some money.
I will add an intermediate mage report at a later date.
Noob, you f***ing noob, well done noob, go away noob
By Steve on Jan 30, 2007 | In An Introduction | Send feedback »
Now the word noob is such a powerful word, it can bring out all sorts of emotions in people and it can change a placid individual into a foul mouthed psychotic nuisance.
I said in a previous post that I was going to write an article about the word noob, the word is used in Runescape and many other games and forums etc.
The history of noob, noob first came about as a word for a new player, it was never a derogatory word it was simply a new player. as time has progressed it has changed its meaning to effectively mean a player who is annoying.
The word for a new player has needed to change as the noob word has taken on a new meaning, the word newb was born this can never follow the same fate as noob because the very word has the "new" in it so no mater how it is used new will always mean new as in new player.
Noob can be used in so many situations, it is normally used when the user is not as good or as experienced as the other player, they may call someone a noob if the other player gets the coal rock, or they get the dragon first or they kill them in the wildy, so effectivly they are saying you are a noob because you are better than me.
Other situation it may be used is if someone is selling something for a lot more than the market value or begging or saying they can do things or get things that they obviously cant.
So we have worked out that someone calling you a noob is a compliment, unless you are in the second example above in which case you are a noob, why do so many people get upset about it.
I have seen people get called noob and responding with loads of obscenities many *'ed out but some avoiding the filter, in this situation I tend to agree with the caller, to get upset about a word with the possibility of getting your account banned you truly are a noob.
So what do you do? the answer is easy! just ignore them and walk away, does being called a noob really hurt you? if it does then indeed you are a noob, when I was a kid there was a saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me".
What does the person gain out of calling you a noob, he or she vents a bit of frustration that they are not happy with the situation, let them do it, it does you no harm, just ignore them if they keep on and you cant ignore tele away and do something else for a while, put them on your ignore list if you need, I can ignore people without putting them on my list.
Noob means I am annoyed because you are better than me, or you are being stupid and doing or saying stupid and annoying things, if you are being called a noob for the latter then you are a noob, just accept it and carry on.
Dust Devil
By Steve on Jan 27, 2007 | In Slayer Monsters | 1 feedback »
The Dust Devil is an important monster on Runescape because it is the lowest level monster to drop the dragon chain body.
Dust Devils live in a well called the smoke well in the Al Kharidian desert just south west of Pollnivneach look for the red ! on the minimap, to enter the well you must wear a face mask or your stats will be hit considerably, there are warnings before you enter if you are not wearing a mask.
Best way to get there is to get to shanty and take a carpet to Pollnivneach. when you get to Pollnivneach head south through the village and keep to the west as you leave the village you will see the ! mark on your minimap on the other side of an elevated section.
You can not enter the well unless you have started Desert Treasure quest this is where the smoke diamond is located.
A tip when fighting Dust Devils is to play in low detail in high detail there is a dust haze across the display making it difficult to see, if you have private text separated it is almost impossible to read, our pictures were taken in low detail so you can see what is happening.

To kill the Dust Devil you need to be at least level 65 slayer, they are not difficult to kill and they drop Ugthanki kebabs that heal 19 when eaten so this can make your stay longer, there max hit is 8.
There is a range / Mage spot in the main room and a few scattered around the well, they are non aggressive. but like to spit at you when attacked, they breath in air and dust and bits of gravel and breathe out in your face, without a face mask you will take damage.

In the picture my friend is not really a midget, I look bigger because I am a Hunk and a lot stronger faster and better than him.

Barrows again
By Steve on Jan 26, 2007 | In Mini games, The News as it happens | Send feedback »
Just an update on the other days Barrows Run.
Another 5 runs later after writing that nights blog I got Ahrims staff, not of great value but still another Barrows item.
I did 20 runs the following day and got Dharoks helm, I have now taken a break from barrows and concentrating on getting 94 mage so I can Ice Barrage, I don't PK but something tells me that things are going to be changing soon.
I am off to Steel Dragons as these are a lot of xp and very little work involved, I will be using my chaos gauntlets and using fire bolt, I find that when using fire wave that it splashes too much and is very expensive on runes that I want to save for my Baraging time.
bolts do take a little longer to kill the dragon but they are free as a by product from Barrows and as soon as you attack a dragon provided you keep your anti fire breath pot handy you can just sit back and watch.
And on occasion you get some dragon legs or a skirt.
What have I been up to
By Steve on Jan 24, 2007 | In Mini games, The News as it happens | 8 feedbacks »
Hi everyone sorry I haven't written for a while, business has been a bit hectic over Christmas and the new year, spending more time playing than writing about Runescape when I get the time.
I have got a lot of levels over this period and had many treasure trails. I may get time to publish my levels but will certainly try to keep this blog up to date from now on.
I have changed the way I do Barrows I have a theory that appears to work well.
I had 200 prayer pots and thought I would put Barrows to the test and work out some ways of getting armour, my theory has gone from my original which got me no armour or weapons for over 200 runs to getting about 5 or 6 items a day.
When I first started doing barrows some time ago I got Veracs helm on my second run killing only 5 brothers, then on my 5th run I got a great axe, at that time these were worth together about 5m.
I continued getting loads of chaos runes and regular weapons and armour, I managed to accumulate about 30k chaos runes mainly doing Barrows, then I hit a dry patch and did about 200 runs with just a few armour drops, Torag hammers and Ahrims staff, I was however getting loads of minds and chaos runes, this was just killing the 6 brothers and a few monsters that got in my way.
After my dry spell I started experimenting with kill count, I have tried with my usual 6 brothers and only killing monsters that got in my way, this worked OK but I never got armour or weapons just loads of chaos and minds, occasionally bloods as many as 127 at a time but rare.
I started getting around 10 to 12 kill count and all of a sudden I was getting bolt racks on most runs as many as 40 to 114 on almost every other run, loads of blood runes as many again as 40 to 120 as well as loads of minds deaths and chaos runes. and guess what I also started getting weapons.
I did about 20 runs one day and got a great axe I sold this for 1.2m in world 2 that day, the following week I went again about 15 runs and got another great axe, haven't sold that yet don't need too as will become apparent in a later post.
As i said initially in this post I had 200 prayer pots that I wanted to use, so sticking to my theory of a kill count of 10 to 12 I spent 2 days at barrows, I ended up with all the Barrows weapons on those 2 days, Dharoks great axe, ahrims staff, Karils crossbow, Torags hammers, Veracs Flail and Guthans War Spear, woot Guthans War Spear street value of 5m woot woot and double woot.
This was spooking me out with a kill count of 10 to 12 I was getting a Barrows Weapon drop about every 20 runs, it was so strange that I was getting all weapons and no armour.
I went again today I have done 20 runs so far and I have got Guthans Helm and Veracs Skirt and Brassard so where it didn't matter before kill count certainly does now.
I wear my normal mage gear but now I take black dragon hide and whip for killing the monsters in the tunnels, I will add an updated Barrows strategy later on when I have more time.
In case you are interested killing more than 10 to 12 makes no difference to the amount of barrows items dropped, it is better to get out and go back again.
Contact

Contact has been made.
Well this quest has come out the quests designed for high level players, the most dangerous place on Runescape a place where you are warned well in advance on numerous occasions before you enter.
I was a bit concerned about entering this place after reading the Runescape Knowledge base so I put on my rune legs and plate and a miners helmet, I took a d scimmy and a rune defender all cheap armour and easily replaceable in case I died, I have 19 sets of rune armour that I have received from treasure trails.
You need to speak to the high priest, who warns you of the dangers, he sends you to the old bank where you speak to another NPC cant remember his name yet, he again reminds you of the dangers.
So off I went in search of glory, I entered the old bank and went down the stairs, at this level you are safe and can buy tinderboxes and torches from the guards, enter the trap door and you are dropped in a large maze there are mages about and large beetles, the mages mage you (What a surprise) and the beetles melee you, your aim is to get to the other side of the maze, if you want you can kill the monsters you meet on the way, I simply ran past them taking up to 14 damage, they are easy to get past but you can take 2 or 3 hits as you run, protect prayer can be used and is effective but I didn't bother.
The main thing to watch out for is the trap doors, these can not be seen but are marked by a scarab picture on the maze wall, you simply need to walk past on the other side of the path, I saw someone fall down one of these but I am not sure where he went, (there is a cavern below so I assume he went there).
You need to complete the maze at the level you enter, there are ladders down but you don't need to use them until you reach the other side, I went down the ladder and there are lots of monsters all ready to attack you, you can use protect mage prayer, I didn't I just ran and never got hit once, I ran through the monsters and went up another ladder further on this reduces the amount of maze you need to complete.
When you get to the other side of the maze you go down a trap door and meet a smaller cave type corridor, there is no danger here until you reach the far end the second time, the first time you search the body that can be found there, I thought it was a dead goat but apparently it was a body, read the parchment you get and talk to the girl with the mustache the other side of the cavern.
She will send you back to get osman (I will check spelling later), go back to al kharid and speak to him and he will agree to meet you at Sophanem, I used this opportunity to put my dragon hide on as rune is not required and it offers a better mage defence. fly to Sophanem, best route is carpet to Pollnivneach then from Pollnivneach to Sophanem.
Speak to him at the gates and he will go in and a cut scene of you waiting will appear, after a few hours (RL minutes) you decide to go in and find him, go through the maze to the same place and when you get to the cave a cut scene showing him getting attacked by a bug will appear, he then appears to get killed.
This is when the fun starts wander into the cave and get ready to be attacked by a level 190 scarab beetle, if you need use protect melee prayer, he is hard to hit I kept hitting zero's on him with 96 attack, all this time you are getting maged and meleed by mounted scarab beatles and mage manaphites, you only need to kill the beetle the other disappear when it is dead.
When he dies Osman comes back and there is a crappy dagger called keris on the floor, pick it up and do with it as you wish.
Speak again to the high priest and quest complete.
This quest can be done in half an hour, the most dangerous place in Runescape? maybe if you don,t count metal dragons, Kalphite Queen, KBD, Chaos Elemental, wildy, Ice trolls, black demons, etc.
I was hoping this quest would make the quest cape only available to high level or the most determined of players, no chance this quest is not hard and does not take long.
Barbarian Assault
By Steve on Jan 7, 2007 | In Mini games | 1 feedback »
This is a basic help for the new Runescape Mini game Barbarian Assault.
I have only played as Attacker I am level 5 and and considered to have mastered attack but I will be giving tips to help all players. This games requires teamwork to complete it successfully or quickly.
For levels 1 to 9 the principle is the same, the main priority for an attacker should be the highest level combat player in the team, obviously if you are playing as a regular team you should take in turns in each role to give other players experience and for a change.
All
You need to inform the other player what they need to use or do by using your horn, when the option changes let them know before you do anything, so they can change their option as required, for an example If the egg colour changes I will let the collector know straight away before changing my attack style, this will ensure that we can use the required change as soon as possible, if you forget to notify don't apologise just notify as soon as possible but get ready for a change in option shortly.
Healing
At level 115 combat I only need healing at wave 8 and 9, but if you are a healer just keep healing if you see anyone in need of any health, all players should go to the pool to the south if you require immediate healing, this is where the healers fill their vials so you can get healed as soon as they come back, when you are at full health go back and resume your normal duties.
The healer also has a job to poison the penance healers, this is done by using the poison food with them, poisoning them will help reduce their hp and therefore make it easier for the cannon to finish them off.
Collector
Collect the required eggs as soon as possible if you fill the hopper kill the penance healers first, fire poison and then continue with explosives, these can not be killed by the attackers or the defender so must be killed by cannon, when the attackers have killed all the rangers and fighters they can take over the cannon and you should just collect the eggs this will allow the rest of the monsters to be killed as quickly as possible, when all healers are dead kill the runners.
Defender
Kill the runners as quickly as possible by setting the appropriate trail and traps, this roll is not as important as the other rolls until you get to the queen, then there is a lot of pressure on you.
Attacker
Put auto retaliate on run to the north west corner and attack with the attack style for the moment this is displayed in the top right hand side of your screen, with auto retaliate on you will normally attack the rangers first, these can attack from a distance and can attack player by the cannon, when all these are dead the canon is then a safe haven for all players getting low on health, kill off the fighters and then make your way over to the cannon and kill the rest of the monsters that remain.
If you are using the wrong attack style you will not hurt the monsters and take 2 damage at each hit if you haven't been notified what style to use just change it until you stop getting hit for 2's.
The Queen wave 10
First rule is do not panic or you stand no chance.
The queen is not difficult to kill, in fact the this is probably the easiest wave of all, it helps to have 2 healers for this round, she is level 209 and can only be killed by omega eggs, first of all you must kill all monsters so kill all penance rangers, fighters, healers and runners before you make omega eggs and attack her.
Even if the queen has arrived just continue to use the horns and kill the remaining monsters, turn off auto retaliate so you don't keep going back to the queen, the runners now are out of the range of the cannon so the defender must use their trail of food to trap them.
The healers must run around healing everyone as they need it this may involve a lot of work because the queen can attack everyone everywhere and can hit 14 damage.
Attacker as soon as the wave starts run up the west side pick some crystals from the mushrooms on the way up and then attack the rangers as before, kill all rangers and fighters as with previous waves, when they are all dead look for other monsters not yet killed, these are normally runners who hide in the south east corner, there is nothing you can do but give the defender a bit of encouragement.
As soon as all monsters are dead go to the healing pool and make the omega eggs, the collector will load the cannon hopper and everyone should try to fire, it is quite difficult as you have the queen and her little helpers trying to attack you stopping you from being able to fire.
It only takes about 8 eggs to kill her you then exit and see your success screen.
Job done
