Runescapeblog system update
By Steve on Jan 17, 2008 | In General Information | Send feedback »
We will be performing a system update of the Runescapeblog blog software on our server, this will be carried out over the next few days, we anticipate that the site will only be affected for a short time, We estimate it will be down for 15 to 30 minutes at the most.
We carried out the update on one of our other sites and went through smoothly and we anticipate no problems when we perform the upgrade on the Runescapeblog or Runeblog server.
The required trademark recognition text will be missing from the bottom of our site for a short time, for the sake of legalities.

Summoning the early stages
By Steve on Jan 16, 2008 | In The News as it happens, Summoning | 4 feedbacks »
Runescape has eventually launched its new skill summoning.
My first opinion of summoning it is it looks nice, I think it should have been called pets because I cant see me using it to any great extent, it seems to be more trouble than its worth, I reserve judgment until I have tried it a bit more but the idea of recharging summoning as well as prayer sounds like a pain, Jagex can I have a summoning post in my house please?

I had a play yesterday and got 20 levels and 128 combat, I have seen many 128's and no 129's I guess there will be some but I haven't seen any, getting level 20 summoning is quick and easy using the 275 charms that you are given on the quest, doing the quest takes you up to level 4 summoning, killing the wolves on white wolf mountain is the closest place to get wolf bones, I killed werewolves at Canafis because the other wolves were having a hard time from the lower level players, while in Canafis I bought the raw chickens from the shop next to the bank. as soon as I could make deadfowl pouches, I made them until I could make the ones with the snails, bought some snails from Burg de Rott shop and continued until level 20.
Guam and iron ore are used for some of the higher level pouches so watch the price, I anticipate it going very high for a short time before returning to normal as the novelty wears off
Aberrant specters drop charms, this is where I experienced my first bug, the smellies were no longer dropping herbs, I was getting charms one in four kills and just no other drops, it was annoying but soon settled down later and I got my herbs back.
Infernal Mages my next slayer task gave me 48 gold, 5 crimson and 2 green charms, every other drop was a charm so its going to be easy for people who enjoy slayer such as myself.
It is going to be a very dear skill to train, shards cost 50gp and for the really high pouches its going to need over 200 shards per pouch.
The one thing I liked about it is, I can gain several levels in a day instead of several days for a level, it wont stay that way for long but nice to see none the less.
Haven't been to the RS forums to see the weekly quitter posts but im sure there are some, I can just imagine "Its not f2p so im quitting members to protest" "lets walk around Fally shouting because my dog won't grow".
Its expensive, its not very quick to train, it has no visible means of making cash (apart from merchanting), I have been informed that the charms are not tradable so you need to work for this skill not just buy the supplies on GEbay, thats got to be good.
I will try it a bit more and report back here my findings.

A reflection on the Grand Exchange
By Steve on Jan 10, 2008 | In The News as it happens | 9 feedbacks »
The Grand Exchange, I had anticipated this being a great success, my only concern was that if there was no control the price of items would just plummet over night, Jagex put in the 5% price change margin which prevented my only real fear.
It has been around a while and people are getting used to it, most of peoples stock piled items have been sold and the prices are starting to return to normal, most of the rants have died down, my opinion is the Grand Exchange is indeed Grand, it is good for all, it is great for people who want to buy stuff or sell in bulk, it is great for merchants and it is also an extension of your bank.
The prices on GE are not the same as before, that is a fact, some things are dearer some are cheaper, it is impossible to generalise on price changes because there is no set pattern.
The price of herbs has dropped, this may be because Herblore is a non profit skill, the price of pots is very low, at current price super attack pots are less than 300gp, that is a ridiculous price for such a useful pot.
The price of raw fish has dropped, this may rise with the fall of the bots after the unbalanced trade update, no signs of that yet, cooked fish is cheaper than raw so you make a loss cooking fish.
Logs were an interesting case, the price of Yew and Magic logs went on the GE at a very high price, I left these as I guessed the price would drop to the pre GE price but no the price went up, the price of logs was at an all time high, I guess there was a fletching boom, as people saw the price was so high more people were cutting trees to cash in on the latest money making scheme, as a result of that the prices are starting to fall as more logs are becoming available, supply on demand at its finest.
Now dragon bones, this is where I took advantage of the market, when they were introduced to GE they 1.9k, I went away and came back later and they were 1.55k quite a drop in a few hours, so I bought 25k dragon bones, I used them on my alter to get 99 prayer and sold the remaining bones on GE for 2.2k, the price has risen now to 2.5k, pre GE they were 1.8k and 1.5k before the piety prayer, interestingly the price of dragon hides has sky rocketed as well.
The price of high level ores has remained the same but low levels ores have dropped, this is the time to buy coal and iron ore.
Runes dropped in price they were very low for a long time, I guess this is because of stock piled runes, I have 12k nature runes and 27k law runes, I don't need to sell so I keep them, many others will have many more and just put them on GE to get rid of them, they have recently started to rise I guess maybe because the player stock piles are going down but I think it more likely because the free Law companies can no longer operate more people are buying laws, nature runes have risen but not by much, I anticipate the fall in prices of nature runes because Alching is no longer free xp, the price on GE will not fall below the alch price, alching is a slow and monotonous way of magic xp but popular because its low, free or profit making costs, I guess people will use combat spells so they can recover some of their cost from drops.
Armour, dragon hide is an end product of crafting and the price has dropped because crafting is a very popular skill and there are always people crafting dragon hides as one of the easiest methods to craft. the price of rune plummeted and is just starting to rise again dragon has remained about the same.
Seeds, the price of tree seeds does not effect me as I get mine from my kingdom, I have noticed that magic tree seeds have sky rocketed im not sure but I guess Yews would have as well, I have also noticed that Calquat seeds are very low about 35K as opposed to over 200k for Magic seeds, I believe the xp from Calquat trees is similar to Magic, the only difference is Calquat can not be looked after by a farmer and take longer to grow, at that price difference you can afford to lose many Calquat trees and still be saving money, I lose about 1 in 5.
Weapons, dark bow has dropped from 3.2m to 2.3m, dragon scimitar and dragon long are hanging around cost price, whip dropped and has now started to rise again, the DDs or DDP++ as it is now known has fallen below the cost price, dragon dagger cost 30k in the fairy place and P++ used to cost 15K, put them together and you have a DDS for 25K, I know many of the use of the DDS has been taken away with the liberation of the wilderness but it is still a very powerful weapon.
There are many people who say that it is no longer possible to merchant, I have always said the good merchants can thrive with the GE and the bad ones will moan, a good merchant will adapt to the changes in Runescape and learn other ways to make money through trading, the only difference now is you need to be on the ball with prices (easy with the GE) and be alert and watch price trends, make the most of updates and speculate using the Runescape announcements, Ok you need some intelligence now instead of just luck but isnt that the way it should be?
I use the GE as an extension to my bank If I am going somewhere new and I don't know very well I will wear rune boots instead of dragon, I can buy these easily at bottom price and sell them again if I am finished often for max price, this is the same with almost anything.
Despite peoples addiction to moaning there are no drawbacks to the GE, Ok prices have changed but not to any great extent, it is just a case of adjusting to these prices, if you keep thinking of things as pre GE price you may buy many things and not others, if you just accept prices as they are and buy what you want you will have what you need.
I was going to do a full wilderness and unbalanced trade summary but this post started to get a bit big, I will do those at a later date.
Terror Dogs for cash
By Steve on Jan 7, 2008 | In Making Money on Runescape | 2 feedbacks »
I was playing the other day and wanted to try something different, I though about a granite helm I got from the haunted mines and the mini quest to get to them, I sold the helm on GE when it first came out for about 200k.
I thought it would be a good way to get some extra cash and do something different at the same time, I got my guthans amd wandered off to try and find the terror dogs, when I first went there the minigame was new and I could follow others, this time I was on my own and took hours getting there, my guthans was well tested as I took a fair amount of damage form the skellies in this multi combat and multi trap area, it is good that the guthans heals easily on the monsters down there so I could just heal when I stopped to look around.
I remember the terror dogs being close to the bank and just a few obstacles to get there, that didn't make it any easier it still took me what seemed like and age to find them but as I got closer it started to look familiar, eventually I found them and I was attacked by multiple dogs in the room, each dog capable of inflicting 15 damage quite regularly.
I hid myself in a corner so only 1 or 2 could attack and my guthans could deal with that even managing to use my whip and dfs for some chioce hits.

AS they got used to me I went to the centre and attacked the level 110 dogs only, im not sure if the 100's dropped granite helms so I concentrated on the 110's just to be sure.

It wasn't long before I got my first granite helm, then my next then my next, in all I got 6 helms in about 4 hours of slaughter, I am a 126 so it would probably be quicker than most but they are not hard to kill, I left when I ran out of room and my pots run out.

Not a bad few hours so off I trot to GEbay to sell the helms, I wasn't sure of the value but the one I got from last sold quite quickly.

2 Sold that night and when I logged in this morning this is what I saw.

Considering you can go to abyssal demons and not get a whip in 4 hours getting more value than a whip in 4 hours with the only requirement is 40 slayer, not a bad trip, its nice to have a change, to earn some well good cash is a bonus.
