How Trustworthy Are Your “Friends”

This is a true story written by one of my friends, its a sad story that shows what greed can do to the weaker short sighted members of Runescape.
Basically this is a message to all players no matter how experienced you are to let you know that even experienced players can be scammed.
I have been playing Runescape almost 3 years and in that time have had many friends come and go. There are very few friends (about 2) on my friends list that I met within the first 6 months of playing the game that are still on there.
How long are you friends with someone until you can trust them?? Unlike real life Runescape life is different, there is no face to face to judge people. You judge people on stuff they say and do, or at least try.
I have a core of friends who I talk to of about 6-10 friends, not that I don’t talk to others its just that I seem to spend time talking to these people more than the others, Now this group of friends ranges from people who I met about 1 and a half years ago to the most recent of 5 months ago, now in this time you think you get a sense of the person your talking to, what they like what they don’t, what you can say to them and not offend them, things like this, its how friendships are made. Now I’m not a rich player by any means, I have no rare items. However I have “helped” players on multiple occasions not just my “circle” of friends but also others in not only training but also with advice in game and non game things. I try to be the nicest I can be even when sometimes you feel down I try to keep my chin up and enjoy my time in game.
Well for the first time ever only 2 weeks ago I almost quit. The reason … I was scammed… and not only that but by a friend of over 5 months … and someone who I really trusted.
“Why quit it’s only pixels”. Yeah it’s easy to say that when you didn’t sell almost all your things in game to buy the item that I got scammed of… a bando’s god sword!!
Ok here is a little background of what happened.
For the sake of this I will call the person “Le Roo” (Not their real name)
I started to talk to Le Roo one day and became friends over time. Now I hate selling things and they had a knack of selling stuff. So I would pass them certain things to which they would go and sell them take a small cut E.g. I wanted 8k each for a super set. If they sold for 10 k they would keep the 2k as a selling fee, so both party’s were happy. Then Le Roo wanted to train their mage from lvl 88 to 92.. “No problem I can help you” I said. I “ran “ air orbs for them, they used my orbs and cosmics and stood at the alter in wildy as I teled to edge bank and ran back with replacements. This is better xp and quicker and even less clicking than alching. I also gave any alching to them to help providing all runes and items. Then they came to me with a plan. They wanted to do alching but were short on money and asked if any of my friends would “double nats” for them. (I know a few lvl 91 rcers) but I said well when I help people it’s not normally hand outs, I normally train a skill at the same time so I offered to make laws for them, they provide the ess I make laws if they would do runs along with me. “No problem” so we started to run laws using the balloons. Now they made 5k laws. And I made 15k (needed that for a lvl) so I dint mind and exchanged all for essence. They then sold and bought nats and then alched to 92 J. Great we were all winners I got my rc lvl they got the 92 mage they were after.
Then I Was talking to a friend of mine who had recently purchased a bando’s god sword and offered to duel me to try it out so I tele to duel arena and have a few sparring matches with them and instantly love the sword, they offered to let me have a go, I try it out … (2 hit a lvl 115. 55 special then a 40) and decided to finally sell all my stuff to get this sword and use it to train strength with..
So I proceed to sell pots mainly via Le Roo with no problem and got all the way up to 46 mil in bank, now I have a few things left to sell as the sword was selling at 48 mil at the time, Le Roo then loans me the cash for the sword and we buy it and go off to duel arena for a while me and them using it with no problems. I then log out for the night.
Next day Le Roo messaged me asking to duel again we do and still no problem I loan them the sword and all is good. I then sell some stuff to give back the 2 mil I had lent from them.
Then a few days later after repeatedly loaning the sword out and training with it they asked if they could loan the sword as I was away for a few day’s… No problem I said … I returned to find myself on ignore and all her “friends” telling me I had been scammed.
I have since seen Le Roo in edge bank. No mention to me and now even denies having the sword… they won’t talk to me but through friends she tells them I never lent her the sword.. Making me out to look stupid.. Now am I more upset at the fact I lost the sword this way?? No.. But then why do I feel down and so stupid about it.. The only thing I can think of is, like I say I have “a few real friends” who I trust and they were one of them.. These friends I would do almost anything if they were hacked or scammed or even if they wanted to buy their own god sword, I would donate (I have in the past) and even focus my training to help them get what they want. So if Le Roo would have said to me could you help me get a sword … I would have and I think that’s why I feel so silly about it.. A Friend has stolen from me and that is just plain wrong. Someone who you trust and hope they trust you has betrayed you and you feel hurt by that more than the loss of the items whether they be a 50 million gp sword or 100 raw sharks, the number doesn’t really matter it’s the trust lost that matters. I now am suspicious of almost everyone even old friends and that is the worst part about the scam, it’s changed me as a player and for that I am truly sorry to those who know me, and the reason I almost quit..
However this isn’t actually a sad story, it’s actually one of what “true” friends are.
I told a select few I had been scammed and they tried to speak to Le Roo and ask them why they have done what they did. Le Roo was help and no mention of the sword and there all now on Le Roo’s ignore list I think. Then the un expected happened, I was feeling down and logged off early as wasn’t really feeling up to the game and to be honest was seriously considering quitting. When my “friends” had a meeting in game and decided to donate to me to get me back on my feet. Now people had offered me cash in game a few times saying pay back whenever and it was meant in the nicest way I know and I wouldn’t want those people to think I would be ungrateful to them, but the way I am I would feel like I would forever be in their debt and permanently paying off a loan isn’t my idea of fun.
But when I logged in the next day my friends all messaged me and asked me to go meet one of them I did.. And he forced on me a new shiny god sword.. I say forced, I mean that, I wouldn’t take it. He was fully prepared to drop it and tele if I didn’t accept, as it was a “gift” from my friends they had all chipped in to get me back to where I was before the scam.
I was honestly choked by it I mean people in the game take cash above almost everything and there they were donating to me who had been scammed by a friend and they actually made me realise that not all players in the game are bad, but some are. I would mention names but I wouldn’t like to miss anyone out, you all know who you are and I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you so much, not only for the generous offer but also for restoring my faith in the game and in my true real friends J
So to all the people reading just be careful with your items and if you loan them out be prepared not to get them back as there is no guarantee however there really are some great people that play the game and even though it’s difficult still try to have fun and meet other great players.

I am very much the same I would keep the name anonymous if I had been scammed, fortunately it was not me being scammed and I have no problems naming anyone who scams a mate of mine.
His scammers name was Oo Rel, she is now infamous amongst the RS world by being named and shamed on my blog.
I will be publishing a post about friends on Runescape at a later date, keep checking back for my regular updates.
If you are scammed, just live through it, but remember there are other people in the game and most of them are good.
I guess it's good to be scammed a few times, it is what toughens you up, makes you a better more "aware" player (knowing from personal experience). I found that you really have to watch a player’s moods, or how they phrase their words, because, quiet a few good friends of mine have scammed me, so now I don't hand out the items for free, but rather as for something in return first.
P.S. It really takes some good friends to pitch in 48 mil.
