Newbs fighting techniques, range, mage and melee
I went to the wizards circle just south of Varrock the other day (I will explain why in another post) I was killing the wizards wearing my Bandos, whip and DFS, I picked a world that had no one there because I can 1 hit kill them and would stop the newbs getting xp.
I found a world and started to kill them, as soon as I got some wizards robes as a drop I put them on, I was a level 136 with bandos tassets robe top and wizards hat, takes me back to when I was a low level with my wizzy gear on only able to dream of having 10k in the bank and a set of full rune.

As I was killing a level 67 came along with a cannon and set it up, he must have more money than sense because Cannon is a Rich Mans toy, balls cost 180gp ish each at the moment, its a non multi area so there was little benefit having it there anyway, he was wearing full addy (t) and attacking the wizards, wizards being wizards were maging him and he was taking damage, I told him to take off his armour so he would take less damage to which his reply was "LOL", another player came along in a mixture of mith and steel armour again I advised him to take the armour off to take less damage, he then logged off.
That is the reasoning behind this post, if you are new to Runescape you may not be aware of the best armour to wear for each style of attack, range, magic and melee all have techniques that need to be followed to prolong training without bank trips.
Melee
If you are fighting monsters that attack with melee attack style, these are things like swords, axes, mace and daggers the best armour to wear is Metal armour, iron, steel, mith, addy and rune are all good against melee attack the higher level armour offering the best defence, wearing dragon hide or mage can offer a small degree of defence against melee attacks but no where near as much as metal, wearing non metal armour will not reduce your effectiveness when you are attacking using melee.
Range
This is similar to melee in the fact that metal armour has good range defence, so if a monster is attacking using range, this can be arrows or rocks then metal armour will offer a good defence, you will take less damage wearing metal armour than dragon hide or mage robes, if you are using melee to attack a monster that ranges you have the best defence and ideal attack armour, however if you are ranging a ranging monster, wearing metal armour will reduce the amount of times you hit, this in turn will slow down the speed you kill it and you will suffer more damage, wearing range armour, dragon hide or leather will not reduce your ability to range them so you will hit your best but you will take more damage, in this situation you need to weight up whether you need better defence or attack ability, there is little to be gained by ranging a ranger so this should not be a problem, wearing mage robes against a ranger is not to be advised.
Magic
This is where it gets interesting, defending against magic attacks, if you are fighting a mage you should wear Dragon Hide armour or leather, leather and dragon hide offer the best defence against magic, leather armour, then green, blue, red, black dragon hide have increasing magic defence so wearing this armour will reduce the amount of times a mage has a successful hit on you, wearing this armour will not reduce the chance of a hit when melee or range attack is used against them, it will however reduce the effectiveness of a magic attack against a mage, mageing a mage is not to be advised anyway, if you are attacking a mage with metal armour removing the armour will reduce the damage you take.
The combat triangle
The combat triangle is not really a triangle is more of a line with mage having the short straw.
According to the triangle mage beats melee, melee beats range and range beats mage in an attack, it is more of a double triangle.
Defence (armour) wise, Range beats mage, mage beats melee, melee beats range
Attack (weapon) wise, range beats mage, melee beats mage, mage beats nothing
Summary
If you are ranging or meleeing a mage wear dragon hide or leather
IF you are ranging anything wear dragon hide or leather
If you are meleeing a ranger or a meleer wear metal armour
If you are maging a melee wear magic robes, (provided they can not hit you)
If you are maging a ranger, don't
There are exceptions to these rules but as a rule of thumb it will help you keep safe until you have had chance to test things out.
