It's a shame but on the other hand not all dads are as responsible as you are teaching your son internet security as in not giving out name address the school they go to and things like meeting people in real life.

As I say it's a shame but to be honest I sort of side on the side of Jagex on this one. I mean ok your son isn’t one of the vulnerable, but there are lots and lots out there that are and to try and protect the kids who play online this is a measure (if not slightly drastic)

But as you say it would have been helpful to have a "parent" override however as we all know they are generally easy to bypass by most kids. Hard one really to decide on but as a rule I would say maybe it has more advantages than dis-advantages.

What is the difference between a kid bypassing an adult over ride or a kid starting a new account and putting a different age in, at least with an over ride option they can have the name they originally wanted.

****-
I was permanently muted at level 57, I am now level 86. I have taken full responsiblity for my actions and I am full of remorse. But, really i have no problem being muted. I use AIM to talk to my friends while I play RS. Being muted is punishment, I did fine when there wasn't quick chat. I do thank it for the oppertunity to tell people that I am not a bot though =).
